Certain compounds of commercial interest that were earlier produced only from exotic sources of plants, animals & microbial origin are now produced in domesticated crops by using genetic engineering techniques.
Transgenic plants can act as living bioreactors for low cost of production of pharmaceuticals & chemicals.
This is know as molecular farming. It has been possible to produce vaccines, industrial enzymes, polypeptides,fatty acids, carbohydrates and biodegradable plastics through molecular farming.
